ARKAS

ARKAS (Archaeological Cadastre of Slovenia), the national record of Slovenian archaeological sites integrates information regarding the location, type/category of site, archaeological period, relevant bibliography and archived material. Publications and archives of surveying reports, compiled in the Institute of Archaeology at the Scientific Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy for Sciences and Arts in Ljubljana, represent the primary information source. The database contains archaeological sites from the Palaeolithic period up to the Middle Ages and covers the entire territory of present-day Slovenia, except for the urban topography. The input of data commenced in 1993 and is still ongoing.

The first version of ARKAS on the Web was launched in the year 2000 and enabled only text based information. Later on, with the intention of obtaining an effective spatial system, the Web GIS Map, this version has been upgraded with spatial databases, which enable interactive mapping and cartography and real-time visual presentation of the sites.

The ARKAS System is dedicated to expert users. Currently it is available just in the Slovene language and it is password protected (http://arkas.zrc-sazu.si). However the essential elements of the ARKAS System are presented also in English to the general public within the Interactive map of Slovenia (http://gis.zrc-sazu.si/zrcgiseng).
