Features of the physical environment surrounding past human communities can be effectively inferred by archaeozoological studies. Although differential environmental adequacy of e.g. small ruminants (drier, hilly areas) and pig (river valleys and dense woodland) or alpine ibex (rocky montane regions) and fallow deer (open woods outside alpine regions) can be telling in this sense, small mammals (insectivores, rodents, bats) proved to be much more indicative of past habitats then are larger mammals. |
